The Board of ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) expresses our deepest condolences on the passing of former ASEAN Secretary-General, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan.
Dr. Surin was a dear friend and colleague to many of us and the image of a regional and global statesman. A respected politician, parliamentarian, foreign minister, and leader, his deep commitment to the values of democracy and tolerance stood out throughout his career and was exemplified not just in his words, but also his actions. Dr. Surin represented a strong and important voice supporting human rights in the ASEAN region. He always made time to speak to civil society, and worked to incorporate the people’s voice at all levels of government.
His passing is a loss to Thailand and all of ASEAN, and his tireless efforts to promote the dream of a truly people-centered ASEAN Community will be continued.
Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.
ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) was founded in June 2013 with the objective of promoting democracy and human rights across Southeast Asia. Our founding members include many of the region's most progressive Members of Parliament (MPs), with a proven track record of human rights advocacy work.
