Walden Bello Testifies at the US Congress

On 10 June 2016, APHR Board Member Walden Bello testified before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission at the United States Congress during a hearing entitled “Advancing Human Rights through ASEAN: Vehicle for change?

During the testimony, he highlighted concerning developments in Southeast Asia related to human rights and democracy, including the erosion of democratic governance, the rise of illiberal populism, and the degree to which ASEAN economic integration has thus far ignored human rights concerns. He also emphasized the need for the United States to support human rights in Southeast Asia through more than just rhetoric and to avoid being hypocritical in dialogues on human rights issues with ASEAN partners.
